Look Before You Send a Download to Your Slicer
Check a CAD export before sending it to a print shop: an STL viewer reveals its silhouette and tessellation from several angles. Examine an enclosure’s underside for an unexpected opening or a visibly faceted curve before revisiting the source export settings.
Use this STL file viewer to compare the supplied shape with your drawing. View STL online and read overall dimensions; visual agreement cannot establish engineering tolerances or detect every defect.
Inspect a Model in the STL Viewer in Three Steps
01Choose an STL from your device
Use Open STL or drop your file onto the workspace. The STL viewer accepts ASCII and binary encodings; no conversion between them is needed first. If you only want to explore the controls, select “Or explore a sample model” and inspect the cube before opening your own part.
02Explore the surface and triangle layout
Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom and right-drag to pan. On touch screens, use one finger to orbit, pinch to zoom and two fingers to pan. Select Show wireframe in the View panel to expose triangle edges. These controls change the presentation while leaving the loaded vertices untouched.
03Read the size and recover your overview
Compare Width, Depth and Height with the expected dimensions. Read the triangle count and surface area for extra context. Select Fit model to view when a close inspection takes the object out of frame. Finish your inspection by returning to a whole-model view and looking for unexpected proportions.
Use Wireframe and Dimensions Together
Wireframe exposes how the surface is triangulated. Broad areas with many tiny triangles may account for a surprisingly large file, while a visibly faceted curve may reflect the resolution of the original export. The STL viewer does not smooth, simplify or rebuild that surface; changing the display cannot add missing design detail.
Check the numbers as well as the picture. A centered preview can make a miniature and a large enclosure occupy similar screen space. Numeric dimensions provide the size reference that a camera view cannot. Coordinates have no stored physical unit in this format; the interface reads one coordinate unit as one millimeter. If an inch-based design looks too small, establish its intended dimensions before applying any conversion elsewhere.
Inspect several angles rather than treating one attractive view as approval. Look for disconnected-looking regions, sharp unexpected edges and a shape that disagrees with the expected part. Visual inspection is useful, but the STL viewer cannot prove that internal cavities are correct or that the mesh is ready to manufacture.
What This Tool Can't Do: Preview Limits
The online STL viewer needs JavaScript and Web Workers, plus WebGL for the interactive scene. Imports are limited to 25 MiB and 400,000 triangles; memory and graphics performance vary by device. There is no cross-section, wall-thickness analysis or point selection. Only STL import is available, and a preview cannot certify watertightness, detect every intersection or replace your slicer's checks.
A FEW THINGS TO KNOW
STL Viewer Questions Before You Open a File
Will viewing change the source file?+
No. Camera motion and wireframe affect the display. Your original file stays on disk, and this page offers no geometry transforms that alter the model's size or orientation.
Can I open both ASCII and binary files?+
Yes. Both STL encodings are supported within the same file and triangle limits. Renaming another format to .stl does not turn it into a valid mesh.
Why does the part look tiny or enormous?+
The source may use a different unit convention, or the view may need refitting. Compare the numeric dimensions with a known measurement before deciding that the geometry needs resizing.
Can I inspect more than one part at once?+
The workspace loads one file at a time. Opening another replaces the current model; there is no assembly comparison, overlay or saved viewing session.
Does wireframe reveal every mesh defect?+
No. It helps you see triangle structure, but overlapping surfaces and subtle topology problems may remain difficult to spot. A clean-looking preview is not a solid certification.
Can I use the STL viewer on a tablet?+
Compatible browsers support touch controls. Complex files may be harder to inspect on a small screen, so try the sample and check responsiveness before opening a larger model.
